It's becoming a common site across rural Canada..farmers working their smart phones when they have an idle minute. A Blackberry for example can make phone calls, send e-mails and deliver instant market information where ever you are.
Here's an example. mobile.farms.com is a internet page designed by the Chicago Board of Trade Resource Centre and Farms.com. The minute you arrive at the page you'll understand that it's made for the tiny smart phone screen since it only has this tiny menu…but the application is big and it's free. Here, you can access market prices, weather and agricultural news headlines while you're on the go.
Select the Grains Overview and you'll find your daily fix of grains and oilseeds pricing information.
If you want more detail, select 'Futures', and then press 'grains' and VOILA! you have a list of prices from wheat, oats, rice, corn, soybeans…you name it!
Investing outside the commodity markets? check out 'stocks'. For example, you can type the letters P-O-T for Saskatchewan Potash, and you'll be able to get up-to-the-minute stock quotes, all on your handheld device. When you follow the menus you can dig even deeper …effectively turning your idle time while waiting in line at the elevator, into management time... even taking a price while your GPS drives the tractor.
The USDA and the weather network have also designed web sites to specifically deliver Cash Grain Bid prices, Commentary and weather information to smart phone users. It's great functionality and it's worth a look.
